Understanding Gush: Key Strategies to Win More Games
In the game of Magic: The Gathering, Stephen Menendian is in a class of his own. The most vocal advocate of Magic’s oldest sanctioned format, Vintage, Stephen is one of the only writers on the planet who could write this book. Weighing in at over 100 pages, Understanding Gush: Key Strategies to Win More Games is the first release of the Quiet Speculation Masters Series. In this series, well-known writers from around the game of Magic will delve deep into topics that are unsuitable or too broad to be covered in the magazine format.
Understanding Gush promises to be a vital reference document for players of all skill levels and interests. Gush is a top-tier competitive engine that powers many archetypes in Vintage and serves as one of the cornerstones of the format’s metagame. Veteran Vintage players will appreciate the characteristic care and depth of thought that made Menendian famous, and those considering the format will enjoy having such a thorough guide when they are learning the basics.
The 2nd Edition of the book features major revisions to every part of the book for clarity, deeper insight, and to help you perform in Vintage tournaments like never before. You will not only learn how to master Gush decks, you will be inspired! That’s a guarantee! This book is not simply a guide, but a resource and a reference that will endure so long as Gush is part of the Vintage format. You will enjoy and learn from this book for years to come.
Inside the cover, you’ll find deck lists, a match-up analysis for every major Vintage deck, sideboarding notes and tables, as well as useful case studies. This is the book that Wizards’ R&D member Erik Lauer calls “a tour de force.” Your purchase goes further than just the book – you will receive updates and a special buyer-only newsletter from Stephen himself in which he answers your questions about the decks within.

So Many Insane Plays: A Mirrodin Besieged Vintage Set Review
If you are a Vintage enthusiast, you’re wondering right now what to pick up from Mirrodin Beseiged for your decks. It is a set that Stephen Menendian describes as being “full of Pithing Needles” because it contains so many specialized cards for Vintage players. Stephen reviews each and every card in the set to explain why some cards are playable and what others are competing against.
Topping out at over sixty-five pages, this in-depth analysis was well-liked by Wizards of the Coast’s Erik Lauer, one of the set’s developers, who said it was “a very thorough review… Stephen gives a top down view of Mirrodin Besieged.” You can get a sense of the big hits and the possible breakouts with the characteristic long view and thoroughness that you have come to expect from Menendian.
If you think Blightsteel Colossus will become the default Tinker target, Stephen’s article will elaborate on why it isn’t such the automatic replacement some think it is. His analysis of this one card spans over three pages as he compares it to the other available options in the format. You can be sure to come away with both a conclusive answer about the Colossus, as well as an understanding of Stephen’s thought process on evaluating the monster.
On top of that, Stephen updated his Complete Vintage Checklist, a list of every card that a Vintage player should have access to. Many readers have indicated to us just how useful the list is, both in organizing their collections and making sure that they don’t miss a card. Some readers have even indicated that they use the list to organize specific Vintage binders for easy deck construction and collection management!
Take a look at the preview here to get a sense of Stephen’s goals in reviewing, as well as read his thoughtful analysis on three cards from the set. We are sure you will find this to be a valuable document to own as a Vintage player.
