Creature- Elf Shaman Ally
Haste
Tap: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. Use this mana only to cast creature spells.
1/1

We knew that we weren’t going to be getting a one mana dork in BFZ, though it’s worth noting that the haste on this card makes it functionally cost one on later turns in addition to fixing your mana. Only casting creature spells is of course a downside, but we already had that on Shaman of Forgotten Ways, and people are clearly big on that card.

Being an ally and an elf both have reasonable shots at being relevant, though my assumption is that this card’s biggest advantage is helping the mana in the inevitable standard Mantis Rider-Siege Rhino deck. It also seems like a powerful way to enable Converge, as you don’t need to play games with fetch lands to search up a 4th or 5th color of mana to feed into cards like Woodland Wanderer or Skyrider Elf.

I’m concerned about the potential value of any given rare from this set, but this card is basically guaranteed to be played, and is likely to show up in multiple archetypes.  As an Elf, it will also surely see some play in casual decks, but the supply of rares in Battle for Zendikar will probably be larger than average.  Limit your expectations accordingly.

seems like modern elves would like him, as he allows turn 2 himself + Nettle sentinel(or other 1-drop), increasing the odds of going off. Or am I wrong on this?

What would you remove from the deck? 2-4 dorks?

I’m not sure that the payoff is better than Turn 1: dork, Turn 2: Heritage+ Sentinel+ Whatever hands. I think maybe you’ll have a better setup for turn 3 or maybe more room for white in the deck if that pops up.
