BFZ Spoiler – Drana, Liberator of Malakir (M)

Drana is back!

This is certainly a cool plot-line twist. Seems the second iteration of Drana is quite the Constructed card too. I think this has a place somewhere in Standard. At the same time I have a hard time justifying the $12 pre-order price tag. Being an Ally is valuable, but Drana, Liberator of Malakir’s utility goes beyond her value as a Rally trigger. It’s a creature that really makes combat a nightmare, and basically mandates a removal spell.  Once she gets going, she gets more difficult to stop.

It’s one of the more viable mythic in the set in terms of Constructed playability, and gets extra points for being a 3-CMC creature due to Collected Company. I don’t know if this ever gets played outside of Standard, but it seems to have potential as a casual favorite, as Vampires are typically a somewhat popular tribe. The card is a solid, competitive creature but it’s hard to recommend it as a buy at current pre-order prices.

I have to say they are making Hardened Scales better and better with each passing spoiler card. It’s unreal how much of a blow-out that would be if this connected with a copy of Hardened Scales in play.  There is a growing case for a black-based Hardened Scales deck, it would seem.

Drana makes me think of Vampire Nighthawk, whose power was really above-curve. While this doesn’t have the ability to gain two life while threatening your very best attacker, Drana is still potent. I don’t think it’ll be a good constructed card because WOTC is terrible at designing black decks and black cards.
