“Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.”
While I certainly can make lame jokes using Marvel mythos, this card however is far from a joke. This is one of the more powerful equipment based Commanders I think we’ve seen in a long line of Equipment themed cards. For one, this card gives access to Green, which many other Equipment based commanders such as Kemba, Kha Regent (which is also a cat!) don’t. I think that’s really the underlying power here.
Let’s also include Nazahn’s equipment, for posterity:
I have a feeling this card can transcend the Cat Tribal theme and almost could be run in many “GW Goodstuff” lists just for the simple fact that it’s a self sustaining card and can instantly fetch an equipment on the same caliber of Darksteel Plate (or better?) providing creatures and Commanders a bit of protection. It becomes even better with a long list of blink effects like Conjurer’s Closet.
There already seems to be plenty of buzz about Nazahn in the Commander community, with many statements ranging from “auto-include” to “not impressed but the Hammer is amazing.” I do think this card will end up being included in a myriad (and actually great with Blade of Selves!) of different archetypes. It is still too early to tell if this card will end up performing better as a card in the 99, or as a dedicated Commander.
While we don’t have the entire decklist previewed to us (as of this article being written and published) – I do think there may be some cards ahead of Nazahn that likely catch players eye first. I do think over time this card can continue to be utilized and will be really efficient. Unfortunately that may not lead to much value and may not have sustained desire for players to acquire for decks. It is somewhat limited, even if I think it may not be. This will likely be a card that needs considerable amount of time to gain value, but even that may be a stretch.
Hammer of Nazahn on the other-hand, might actually spark quite the interest early on and has a better chance at retaining value as time goes on.
