Our 5-Color Spirit Tribal Commander has arrived!
We also get to take a trip into a time machine back to the plane of Kamigawa, which is always a treat. O-Kagachi is extremely flavorful, and can serve multiple purposes in the EDH/Commander format. Opening up Spirits to 5-Color, and actually being a viable option for some Dragon decks. It also helps that it’s a fairly decent card, and promotes a lot of politics in many playgroups.
It’s ability can be powerful over the course of the game, and O-Kagachi provides us with Flying and Trample to make sure Commander damage connects to other players that decided to make the mistake of attacking. While this card has no inherent protection, there’s certainly plenty of ways to grant it additional keywords. Lightning Greaves comes to mind – a staple in the format since it’s inception. Not every Commander can protect itself – and that hasn’t stopped players from building around these powerful Commanders. O-Kagachi is just another Commander in that long line.
Many players are rejoicing that they can finally build around a 5-Color Spirit Commander, and throw together the cards they’ve always wanted – mainly the Divinity Spirits from Kamigawa:
This looks like a fantastic time, and I’m excited to see where players push the boundaries of this tribe and how they build around this very flavorful and powerful Dragon. Speaking of Lore – I’ve learned by reading that WOTC nailed the flavor win (which is awesome!)because O-Kagachi didn’t have Indestructible due to That Which Was Taken was stolen in the story. How awesome is that!
While this card has many players excited, that may not directly effect the future value of this card. Many may want to acquire this card – but I think other cards in Commander 2017 likely have more desirability and a better chance to retain current and future values. This card will likely be easy to acquire, and waiting could benefit further for acquiring at lower values.
