There are a few incomplete cycles inĀ Magic's history, and we're talking real cycles and fan-recognized cycles both. A real cycle that was long incomplete but was eventually completed was theĀ MirrodinĀ sword cycle:

First we had Sword of Fire and Ice and Sword of Light and Shadow inĀ Darksteel,Ā and not until years later was the cycle completed inĀ Mirrodin BesiegedĀ block, with Sword of War and Peace, Sword of Feast and Famine, and Sword of Body and Mind.

A while back, fans recognized that there was a cycle of overpowered two-drops in each color but red: Stoneforge Mystic in white, Snapcaster Mage in blue, Dark Confidant in black, and Tarmogoyf in green.

Luckly, this cycle was completed in Magic 2014Ā Ā with Young Pyromancer. Some have argued Young Pyromancer's pedigree is not high enough to match those other cards, but it's pretty clear that it's proven itself in many different formats, so I subscribe to the idea of it taking its place in this cycle.

Young Pyromancer

There are a few cards that come to mind for me when I think of still incomplete cycles. Because I am a Cube enthusiast who is a little obsessed with symmetry, they are mostly lands.

Each of these cards was printed in a cycle of allied colors, and each has not been complemented with a cycle of enemy color lands. This seriously bums me out, because I think fast lands and man lands would be snap includes for Cube if they didn't favor half of the color combinations over the other (theĀ MirageĀ fetches are arguably not good enough even if the cycle were completed).

There's other options, like Morphling, Torchling, and Thornling, or you could make the case that we still need five more Swords of X and Y. Which incomplete cycle fromĀ Magic's history wouldĀ youĀ like to see completed?

  1. I’d like to see the River of Tears cycle completed

As a red enthusiast I’d like to point out that Young Pyromancer is nowhere close to the same power level as the other four. It just happens to be the best two drop option… Which isn’t saying a whole lot

    1. As a blue enthusiast, I’d like to point out that all of the 2 drops are actually blue, so I can understand how you might be underwhelmed with Young Pyromancer if you’ve been playing it as a red card.

  2. I, for one, would love to see them finish off Grove of the Burnwillows, so I can play Punishing Jeskai/Grixis. Of course, this would never happen, because that would basically be the end of anyone playing creatures in Legacy.
