A niche format where hardcore players keep their pet decks and play them for fun. I think Modern will very quickly replace Legacy in years to come as a much more accessible format where WOTC has indirect control over the over-inflation of card values.

This would not be my primary motivation for selling out of Legacy.

I am trying to draw a parallel here with the stock market. If I bought a stock that shot up rapidly in price and then stagnated, it'd seem like a wise time to sell. You only profit when you sell, after all. To continue holding in anticipation of additional gains seems a bit greedy. If the format ultimately goes the way of Vintage, many cards will likely settle in price. Dual Lands are perhaps safe, but I'd be shocked if EDH was enough to keep Force of Will a $50 card and Lion's Eye Diamond a $40 card. Prices will drop when Legacy inevitably loses popularity. All it takes is one fateful announcement from SCG: "we will start doing Modern on Sundays instead of Legacy on an alternating basis" and people will panic.

Brilliant. 🙂

I'll give you the same advice I give everyone in this situation — unless you need the money, do not sell. Of course if you need the cash due to the situation at home, it's awesome that Magic was able to fund that. Consider it another gift from this game.
But if that's not the case, don't sell, especially the duals. Even if you don't play, those cards are going to hold sentimental value for you. Basically every Magic player ever has the story of how they sold their cards X amount of years ago and now wishes they had them when they came back. I tell them if they want to get out to sell most of what they have but keep the things that means the most to them, whether that's a particular deck or set or, in this case, a full set of duals.
It may seem difficult to spend time in the game now, but one day, even many many years down the road, you could be sitting and playing Magic with your son and wishing you still had those duals. Unless you need the money to support your family, be a little selfish.

To me it's more like if I keep them I can keep playing with them if I want to and over time they should become more expensive because of rarity (if just because of copies lost in the trash or to people who stop playing but don't sell). I am happy to sell or trade any extra's though.

Part of the price of many Legacy cards is EDH, even if Legacy dies down a bit like Vintage, many cards should still remain valuable. Just look at EDH only cards like Capture of Jingzhou, the EDH community will support high-priced cards. In general I feel that even if Legacy goes the way of Vintage, casual players should at least partially keep the prices high. Considering Vintage, those prices haven't really come down either, have they? Just look at what a card with both Vintage and EDH appeal does now: Imperial Seal, which is getting more expensive than Unlimited power (I'm very glad I obtained one just before it shot up). Obviously looking at P3K isn't entirely fair given the rarity, but I think the same applies to lesser cards as well.

Of course I could not blame you if you do decide to part with them, can certainly see the instant gratification argument and you're bound to need more money when taking care of a little one. For me it would feel more like a loss than gratifying, losing the collection I have spent so much effort, money and time on. Should you want to move some more high-end stuff, like Beta Rares or other high value cards, you could send me a message on the forums, I might be interested (though don't bother for anything in less than EX condition).

Whatever you decide, good luck!

Thanks, pi! My wife and I are truly blessed to have a healthy, cute baby boy on our hands 🙂

Your perspective is one I have generally adopted to date. Holding all my Legacy cards (although not as extensive in breadth as yours) has paid off nicely in most cases. But the price curves on many of these cards have stagnated or even corrected. Look at the Force of Will chart as an example. How do we know we haven't reached the final plateau? I believe the market would now need a significant external change in order to alter the card prices significantly. And with the lack of Legacy news lately, this external change seems far off.

Instant gratification is also a powerful force here. If I sell now, I have cash in hand much sooner 🙂

I am however playing them in EDH and other casual formats. I figure if anything these cards are still going to be quite rare in 20 years or so and only getting more valuable. I guess in a way I also like the collecting itself, though I am a player before a collector.

What I am trying to say is that just storing the cards might not be a bad thing. I figure leaving the decission for later will only gain you more money (though inflation will take part of that) and maybe at some point you do want to pick them up again and then you will be very happy not to have to pay the by then probably much higher prices because you kept them instead. You could even save them to help pay for college for your son later.

On that note, congratulations!

1. Newborn
2. Cash
3. Playing (keeping a few decks)
4. Card Inventory
