If you look over some past articles (mine actually) I did an analytical breakdown of the price drop due to reprinting. The average % drop of a reprint in a standard legal (large print run set) was around 28%, however, this is not the “immediate drop” as you noted a lot of time the immediate drop is 50%+ it just stabalizes and rises to around 70% of it’s original price…barring another reprint.

I built a Modern deck to play Modern and began acquiring staples to brew in Modern. Once I had Goyfs and Bob’s I quickly started testing Legacy decks with what I had. After I playtested my Legacy deck for a few months I finished it out.

I have seen a few other players at the stores I visit do the same thing, to me your point of view is pretty valid.
