This is a great point! I often find myself getting “the itch” when my cash reserves reach all time highs. But this is no reason to go out and spend money haphazardly. I really like your thoughts on sitting on cash reserves and waiting patiently for the next big opportunity. I’ll probably do this.

Also, I agree that going into Modern cards that haven’t spiked as much is the way to go for now. I’ve been buying Tectonic Edges and Stirring Wildwoods most recently. Also a few Spellskites.

Miles,

What if everyone else buys all the Grixis decks and they are either impossible to find or they are sold in larger quantities as a result?

Lol no worries Matt. One commonality between the stock market and the MTG Market: there’s always a bull somewhere. We just gotta find the next opportunity! As a brief update, I like Tectonic Edge a lot in the $1.25 range and I grabbed a few playsets last weekend.

Don’t reinvest it until a good opportunity comes up. I think picking up some Grixis decks are ok, but only pick up what you can move immediately. The last round of commander decks dropped really fast after they came out. You only have about 1 week before it becomes not worth picking up at retail.

If you are flush with cash and need to have some product, I recommend combing through modern legal cards and looking for cards that haven’t had a big price bump yet. But again, don’t invest everything in that as it will be a while before they see the increase due to being in season.

I’ll be getting a Grixis and Esper deck for myself, but I’ll be buying as many Grixis decks I can at MSRP for a nice 100% return (before fees, etc).

Not at retail, but if you can get a nice pre-order discount it’s interesting. I am buying sets at €100, MSRP will be €25 each or higher (have only seen the US MSRP of $29.99, but $=€ usually applies), so basically I’m getting a free deck. Imagine the Grixis deck is about €40-€50 at least and the one with Hua Tuo should bring you at least €30, that leaves just €20 for 3 decks and a less conservative estimate would probably consider those decks essentially “free”.

I’ll admit though, I’m trying to find a deal on all new cards x4 rather than buying the decks, but I’m not as much of a sealed enthousiast as you are.

Sure a stock might have been on the rise for 30 years, but is that because of extremely strong fundamentals, or extremely strong faith on the investor’s part, or just a grossly overpriced thing that people don’t want to believe it is so? I’m not saying that you can’t profit from stocks, in fact you could definitely profit a great deal. But firms in general do have many more hidden variables than MTG cards, and instead of just a few lines of text written clearly on a card for everyone to see, a lot of guessing and human psychology can get in the way. It’s something that requires deeper knowledge about the firms and the economy, and the price trend itself just doesn’t seem nearly enough. (Even in MTG, I believe more in price ceilings than price trends. When the price rises a lot, sell, or at least start selling; don’t buy.)

One thing I noticed about Theros is that it has very poor devotion support, compared to RTR block and even M14. There are almost no good cards that cost CC, no CCC or 1CCC at all, and very few that cost 1CC. Almost all of the highly devoted cards, like Boros Reckoner, Nightveil Specter, Burning-Tree Emissary, Kalonian Tusker, Tidebinder Mage etc. came from cards that will rotate in a year. If Born of the Gods still doesn’t bring us good devotion support, I think it will be safe to say that the gods will be worse than they are now in a year.

I’m wondering if Selesnya would be the next big thing. It doesn’t perform well against monoblue but it does pretty well against monoblack (and most other decks). I wouldn’t advocate buying Loxodon Smiters because the scryland might come out late when RTR cards don’t look good anymore, but I did pick up a bunch of Fleecemane Lion @$5.2.

Really, all 5 are snap buy at retail? Seems very bullish but will keep my eyes open for these.

All of them? You can probably buy all 5 at a discount.

YES!!!! That is one thing I am DEFINITELY looking forward to. Plan on grabbing the Grixis one everyone keeps talking about, preferably in multiples. Are there any others you’d suggest I acquire to keep sealed?
