I know exactly what you are talking about. Part of it is that I’m a high school math teacher so I deal with stuff like that all the time in my classroom. So you could say I have advanced training in that area. The other part is enjoying deck building. If you read my articles frequently, you’ll probably know that I’m not the one jamming the best deck week after week, but rather I’m the guy always brewing. That carries over into helping people with their decks. Have you ever built a deck for someone? Like they paid you to build it for them? It’s a great thing if you ever get the chance but just think about talking to these players as a way to sell more cards. Know what their budget is like and suggest cards for their deck that fit appropriately. Works all the time. Hope that helps some.

How do you deal with people machine gunning cards at you all day? I run a small lgs and all day long people are talking about card sequencing and how they “won a draft at their buddies’ house with cards a,b,c,d, into x,y, and then z won it for me.” How do you deal with people bombarding you all day with crappy combos and asking why Mirari’s Wake is a good card? Then right after that another person shoves a commander deck into your face and asks what changes need to be made…

I could go on. I love Magic and all, I could play all day long. But when people are asking about cards faster than a gatling gun can spit bullets, it gets overwhelming. How do you deal with multiple people wanting expertise and advice all at the same time? I have had to tell people that “we are adults now and can’t interrupt people.”

People ask me all day long questions which can easily be understood by reading their cards completely. I try to teach them how to fish, so to speak.

I just don’t know how to feign interest through sequencing of crappy cards and trying to remember what each of the obscure commons does. I do my best not to let my customers see the brick wall look or to see me provoked, but sometimes it just gets to me. How do I have fun with all the garbage people ask me about?
