That quote was from Kas after his 6th place finish. 🙂

Harriet did say this, though, after the GP:

“This was the deck I piloted to a 9-3-3 finish at GP Bilbao, my best GP result so far. It was a good meta call for the weekend as Izzet Drakes was very popular and this deck has very good game against it.”

🙂

UW The Rock, that’s hilarious! Her definition strikes me as more “midrange,” while rock is specifically a discard-featuring midrange shell. The deck does seem quite well-positioned right now.

I’m happy you mentioned UW Midrange (aka Blink/Flash) as a deck that is well-positioned for this meta, especially vs Phoenix, GDS, Burn, and Dredge. I also wrote about how to approach/beat Phoenix with Runed Halo, Restoration Angel, and UW Midrange, but I won’t share that here to respect your work. If you’re interested, it’s titled ‘Bringing the Fight to Phoenix’.

I’ve been advocating for this archetype in Modern for years (since Sam Black’s UW Delverless in 2012), most notably through Twitter and my 2 Facebook communities, one of which is dedicated to the archetype: https://www.facebook.com/groups/UWMidrangeMasters

Curryvore on MTGO is most well-known for this archetype, which is what Harlan’s list was inspired by:
https://www.mtggoldfish.com/player/Curryvore

In fact, I spoke to Harlan and he wrote about this deck after his 5-0, which echoed similar perspectives about the deck’s positioning, versatility, and adaptability, which make it a solid choice for the format.

Most recently, Kras Kuropatwa, Admin in my UW Midrange community, showed up at at Fusion Gaming 1.5K event with a focused & great UW Midrange list and finished 6th after a strong performance & provided feedback:

2-0 vs GDS
2-0 vs 4c Shadow
2-0 vs UW Control
1-1 vs Scales
2-0 vs GB Rock
2-0 vs Humans
ID

“After today’s tournament, I’ve decided to start calling our deck UW The Rock. It up really well against a huge percentage of the metagame, and so many cards replace themselves, the card advantage, pressure, and flexible answers make it a really appealing choice for anyone who likes interaction and long, grindy games of pure, old school Magic.”

Harriet Wilder, who is also in my community, also finished 9-3-3 at GP Bilbao with the deck, who turned out to be the highest ranked female at the event. You can read her report here:
http://blog.lilianamarket.com/uw-midrange-a-tournament-report-from-gp-bilbao

I’m happy it’s finally getting the recognition it deserves. Thank you, Phoenix. 😉

Oh yes, Blink, sorry, just so used to see both names misused for that deck ^^
But Indeed, I definitely understand that it’s rough to name decks you don’t know.

That I called UW Blink, you mean? Lower-tier naming conventions can prove so Byzantine that I tend not to fret about them too much (see http://quietspeculation.com/clarifying-convention-deck-names/ for more), but this is great info for anyone interested in learning more about the deck! Thanks for the post 🙂

The deck you called UW Flash is in fact called UW midrange, it is being developped on the UW FB group for a while, and you can find some articles about it online, for instance on CKL.
