Some things I mentioned briefly, in the article, are that I have played 2HG at this venue and know the regulars and what I can expect to face ahead of time. Obviously, there could be new players or people trying out different decks but I would suggest they will be less tuned than what people are already showing up with.

Further, I have played 2HG with my partner before so we have working chemistry already and build decks in tandem specifically for events such as this one. It would be a huge article if I went over the partner deck at the same time BUT maybe that’s food for a future article or just a general 2HG article.

I do agree with you that talking about the partner deck makes a lot of sense. Here I’m mostly talking about K’rrik himself and heading off some questions like why I’m playing Syndicate Enforcer and not Vampiric Tutor – the local 2HG meta is a huge part of that.

Our prior experience points us in the direction of what seems to work best; one deck that is racing to win T3-T4 with consistency, and, one deck made of nothing but answers so that we can get a chance to win. You’re also right that mulligans are extremely important here and I only mention this indirectly – I do not really care what hand I draw with K’rrik as I feel that just about any hand with 7 cards is a snap keep – it’s part of how I built this version. My partner will have to be much choosier with their mulligans because it is ESSENTIAL that they have literal turn one interaction or we have to take a mulligan. The nice part about having T1 Interaction is that you obviously can use it on T2-3-4 if it’s not necessary T1. Also Scheming Symmetry is in both decks because it’s just too good in 2HG.

Thanks for the comments and ideas!

I believe the way to approach this if you want to go full on combo is to find a combo where it doesn’t matter which deck has a piece in play. When I played in a 2HG tournament long ago we played 2 copies of the same Oath of Druids deck: really didn’t matter which deck got the Oath or which deck got the Forbidden Orchard, that fatty win condition was coming out (Cognivore in our case). Not saying you should go Oath (this was in about ’05 I reckon), but just as an example of what to look for.

If you are going with a combo + permission approach then the permission deck better be adjusted for the pace of the combo. There are still probably many cards, like the Scheming Symmetry, that are good for both decks, while there are probably ways to be ready for both your plan A and plan B as the permission deck. If your partner plays a random deck full of permission then chances are you have to adjust to when they can and cannot protect your win.

A pair of decks built together will have a better chance in your tournament than 2 individual decks will.
