We start off Commander 2016 with Atraxa! One of the (non Partnered) 4-color Commanders that everyone has been excited for since this product was announced.
The color combination alone has the Commander community buzzing, and with good reason. If we go past just the colors, we’re left with beautiful art (well done Victor Adame Minguez!), interesting design, and a Commander worthy of building around going forward. Atraxa is already being declared by some as “the best Commander for Stax and/or Superfriends”. The applications for Atraxa go even further than that, when one takes into account sub themes with things like Experience Counters.
I’ll provide a small but worthwhile list of the cards the community is talking about right now:
The list goes on.
With the plethora of keywords attached to Atraxa, it lends itself to even supporting a Voltron theme. It might not be the most effective on the surface, but with access to so many colors it might turn out to be just as viable as the other deckbuilding strategies the community is dead set on. I’m confidant Atraxa will provide the sheer flexibility that so many Commander players love building around, and even if themes like Superfriends or Stax ends up being the most viable, there’s still a reason to use Atraxa for a 4-color “Goodstuff” theme.
With Atraxa we see some great design for Commander 2016, and it will surely continue through the rest of the spoilers we will see. I love the overall direction of the Commander 2016 products, and the dedication to so many sub-themes appears to be well thought out. Story, design, art, representation, it’s all been accounted for. I can’t stress enough how impressed I am that Wizards seemed to be diligent and spending the extra time to make sure every aspect of Commander 2016 is appealing. Atraxa will be a success no doubt for many Commander players. For the percent of players that aren’t enamored with Atraxa, then there’s other Commanders with the Partner ability that I will discuss in other spoiler articles!
As far as Atraxa’s value – It’s hard to say if the dedicated 4-color Commanders will have a sudden increase in value. Players will likely use them, but they likely won’t be as ubiquitous as their Partner counterparts. I feel Atraxa could be one of the sought after Commanders based on it’s design and flexibility. At the same time that may not lead to a long term interest and stability. Looking at the current value of Atraxa, I would say that it’s a fine time to acquire them for your collection.
