It feels like every time we see Simic Commanders, or Simic cards in general – they’re either completely broken or totally obscure. There’s really no in between.
I’m leaning to “broken” for Kydele. There’s just so many applications for this card, and likely extremely easy to utilize the ability. Kydele is already putting Commander players on notice, and from what I’ve read the overall reception has been positive. Players are clamoring to build “infinite combo X” decks, and are already looking to see if there’s a favorable Partner Commander to gain additional advantage. Turns out there is:
While this Partnership doesn’t gain any additional access to colors, it does create an interesting dynamic. Essentially the argument here is that 2/3 “combo” pieces are always accessible via being Commanders. That’s largely correct. Instead of having to use cards like Worldly Tutor (or any other tutor) to assemble combo pieces, players can just focus on obtaining one card to complete their combo. Whether it be Umbral Mantle or Staff of Domination to get the ball rolling.
There’s really a lot of possibilities here. From Partner, to solo Commander – when there’s a card like Kydele there’s bound to be something worthwhile. The card pool for Commander is vast, and we’ve seen even recently a card like Selvala, Heart of the Wilds win over players. Simply by creating a copious amount of mana, and drawing cards.
In terms of Kydele’s value, it really all depends on how viable this Commander can become. It may not be immediatly, but engine cards usually tend to take off sooner rather than later. We can look at a recent card similar to this in Rashmi, Eternities Crafter for reference. While this may all be great for future viability, it may not translate to immediate value. I think the desire will be there, and I may not wait if you’re itching to try and build around Kydele. The current value seems justified, and you can hedge against a shift in value later on in the future.
I managed to gloss over some of the reddit threads, and found a rough draft from user “Pepper2Moss” attempting to utilize Kydele to the fullest potential:
