Here we have another recurring theme of straight forward Partner Commanders. I do really like Ravos, Soultender and seems better than it does on the surface. We’ve discussed the underlying design of Partner Commanders in many of the spoiler articles I’ve written for Commander 2016. In this case I don’t think Ravos is being held back, and it can have many applications in Commander.
From what I’ve gathered in the EDH community, Alesha, Who Smiles at Death has been discussed immediately. I do think this is a great way to utilize Ravos, and would be quite the powerful addition indeed. Also the sub-type “Human” gains additional benefits in those archetypes.
On the other hand, it seems BW has a new direction with Ravos. Likely one of the stronger Partner Commanders – it can easily be built around as well. It’s a perfect mesh of BW and a cheaper Reya Dawnbringer effect has EDh players ready to brew. The enthusiasm seems justified since it’s not just another typical “Pillowfort”, which has largely been the direction of this color combination. Not that the archetype is bad by any means. Ravos, while somewhat innocuous, is having a positive reception already. Here’s a small list of cards that would be great with Ravos as the Commander:
The list can be expansive based on additional colors if players branch out with Partner Commanders. I do think there’s a plethora of ways to utilize Ravos – and I think the Commander community will no doubt solve it.
While Ravos, Soultender is great, I’m skeptical about the card’s value early on. This will be a card to keep an eye on similar to Athreos, God of Passage. There will be a desire to acquire this card, and like I stated earlier – it’s a new direction. It’s current value seems fair if a player doesn’t decide to wait, but this will be one to monitor going forward. I will be optimistic for some semblance of long term value since it’s one of the more promising Partner Commanders.
