The guy seemed convinced with the deal, and any one who has traded with you should already know your trading habits well enough that you're not expecting lopsided trades every time.

Also being that you're a collector, i'm sure you have given those other players some good deals on cards to complete sets or playsets. I like trading with collectors because even if a deal is dead even, if i'm getting rid of stuff i don't need and getting something i could use or trade more easily it still feels like i'm coming out in the green, and on the collector's side they're finishing a playset, or closer to completing the collection (if not completing it) in other words everyone's happy and no one got ripped off. Not to mention some collectors will give you a good premium depending on why they want a card on top of things.

I'm a big supporter of throwing things in and giving stuff away. I generally give away a couple boxes worth of commons and uncommons each set plus promos and bulk rares and such. This wasn't a normal trade though. I was just hanging out at school for a few minutes and decided to play a game before leaving. I didn't have much trade stuff with me and the Nissas came out of a deck. Honestly I probably wouldn't have made the trade if it was just 2 Nissa for the Koth because the Nissas are out of my playset so now I have to replace them and that wouldn't have been worth it to me. If I had extra stuff I probably would have had him take some more but I didn't.

My guess is that his partner would have felt worse about just giving up the Koth. Some people who trade really feel like they need to get the same exact number of mythics back as mythics they give up, same for rares, uncommons, etc. I don't get this behavior, but it's reasonably common among people who are new at the game.

James,

I agree that giving him some extras is the right play here, and one that I strongly advocate. I cover this more in depth in my "4 tier system", you should give it a read and see what you think!

Depending on how you've dealt with people it may or may not hurt your rep. People understand that when they come to me and ask for a trade I need to come out just a little ahead, not a lot but in order for them to get what they want from me I have to (on paper) come out in the positives. My rep has only grown to the point that now even the store owner has asked me for cards. Instead of asking the person if they wanted anything more what you should have done is thrown the kid some extras, what it will show is that even though you didn't turn down the trade you still gave the kid more then he wanted and your rep would have only been strengthened as the go-to guy for cards.

Matt stated twice that it was a bad trade and then proceeded to make mention of the price differential involved. The opposing party could have then said something along the lines of: "Ok just Koth." When it comes down to it, I do not see his reputation being tarnished because he asserted his views on the trade a whopping three (3) times and the opposing party still felt comfortable going through with it. Lastly, for all we know the opposing party's view is that Nissa's value will skyrocket (I sincerely doubt it as well)…everyone is entitled to an opinion.

As an aside: while highly unlikely, the opposing party may have been trying to just get rid of the Dragonlord i.e. space.

You should have countered his offer, which would be to just trade for his Koth. Your reputation as an honest trader is intact, but I would still give the man his Dragonlord back. This would really show you're an upstanding gentleman/trader and care about the community. What goes around comes around.

If you feel you have to ask, then you already know..

The most important thing is that you were honest, not that you ended up with a good deal. There's bound to be dozens of comments both ways on this by tomorrow. I like to think I know a thing or two about trading, and from what l see you're fine.

At the end of the day, they all saw you point out the trade difference and that can't be disputed … but that may even fuel the fire that you STILL got a badass trade and spelled it out.

Haters be hatin'.
