This could end up pegged as a win-more card, but I think it's likely pretty decent. It has a lot of upside and not just when you have 11 goblin tokens. If you have two or three creatures, this is a very, very good card. If you don't have any, you shouldn't be looking to your commons to save you, anyway. All in all, Mardu can spit out some creatures, Abzan can keep dudes alive long enough to be counted and this is a solid card. You likely play this.

Toughness? Abzan players just perked up, and green with all of its fat-butted cards is taking notice. This is going to make for some very unfair fights, moreso than trading on the basis of power. This is basically a fight card that rewards you for picking defensive creatures. Having your 0/2 kill their 3/1 seems hilarious to me. Grim Contest indeed.

That said, this is a removal spell, and one that, based on the deck, could be in your favor quite a bit. At common, you likely get this late and if you're built for it, you might be very happy.

I kind of love seeing Magic terms show up in real life. As a Magic player, even normal words can take on special meaning:

IMG_4021

IMG_4011

Sometimes it's not quite exact, but you still recognize a close enough reference to make a Magic connection:

IMG_3919 gildedlotus

A local pizza place has this on the menu (and no, it is reportedly not Magic-related, at least according to the owner):

manadrain

Finally, if Magic players do anything with extreme prolificness, it is create and use acronyms. But for the muggles out there, they don't know that these acronyms are already claimed! Here's a couple I noticed in the last couple weeks:

IMG_3873

IMG_3864

Call me a nerd—you'd be right—but I think this stuff is cool. Except for the Mana Drain (which I pulled off of Urban Spoon), I took all these photos in the last couple weeks. I know that some of you see something like this every day on your commute, or have noticed similar things while out and about. If you've got any particularly cool or funny or out of place ones, I'd love to see them! Tweet them to me at @dbro37, or email them to me at dannybrown37 at gmail dot com. If I get enough good responses, I'll write a follow-up article highlighting the best of the best of the best.

As Marshall Sutcliffe pointed out, it's hard to imagine this card being bad. But is it good? 5 mana is a lot of mana for a wedge that likes to kill people with a Flying Crane Technique for that 6. I like this card with all of its inherent utility and the likelihood that by virtue of playing this (instant speed) card, you're triggering a few prowess abilities, likely on their turn. All in all, we'll have to see if people balk at paying 5 mana in what is shaping up to be a slowish format.

This is very, very good. The one quibble I have is that you want it to tap for 2 in order to get that ferocious creature out there. Still, being ramped up to pump out more is good. This is nutso at common. It's not quite Druid of the Anima and therefore probably not first-pickable in a pack with a weak rare that way Druid was. This is likely fairly early  pickable, though. In the right deck this is very good. Not being able to serve in combat hurts it, not being a 1-drop hurts it (this would be unfair as a 1-drop, even as a 0/1) but I think this is still very good. I wonder how good it would have been if it tapped for R/U hybrid with the ferocious trigger. We'll never know.

The more I stare at this card, the more I think this may be the worst Shock variant ever printed.

I was hoping Ferocious would make this deal 4 damage. Hell, even 3. You can't kill a pro-red creature with the "damage can't be prevented" trigger because you still can't target it. There are very, very few cards in this block that prevent damage, and in the case of single cards, they're using it to stop 2 damage.

This is better than regular Shock but it's also uncommon. I think you take this mid to late if you're red but unless I'm really misjudging this card, I'm really not excited about it. It's obviously decent and as playable as Shock, but being uncommon hurts it. I am not disappointed in this card in and of itself as much as I am disappointed that it could have been so much better and still been very fair and balanced at uncommon.

This is probably the best of the Dragons if you're ahead. Preventing them from playing combat tricks during combat is solid and is going to keep you ahead. White is accustomed to getting fliers, but it doesn't get a ton of dragons (Is this the first uncommon white dragon ever? Someone out there has to know). I like this card a lot. I imagine this will be a snap-include if you have white in your deck in Sealed. I can't say when it's ideal to pick this in Draft, but I'm likely happy with it.

The one thing that sucks about this in draft is that white has the best combat tricks, and you're likely taking a lot of them so you have to worry less about them anyway.  Still, there is plenty you don't have to worry about, and forcing them to play removal pre-combat helps you make good decisions. This is a solid card.

I'll pay 1 mana more than for Air Elemental with a trigger like that.

I do worry, though, that this is a bit of a liability. If you're milling them, you start with a target of 33, more if they mulligan. The earliest you cast this is turn 6, so best case they have 27 cards left. You need to hit them 6 times to win through milling. You have a good chance of knocking a good card into the yard, but a similar chance of making them draw something good 4 turns early. I generally don't like trying to mill them out with 1 card because if you focus on that too much, you'll likely end with them at 5 life and 7 cards in the library and they'll kill you because they focused.

Luckily you don't have to stop dealing them damage because this mills by hitting them, so I hate it less.

Also, I CAN read, thank you. It says "Target player" which means you can totally mill yourself. This lets you delve. This could be a useful case for this card. All in all, this is a fine flier and you likely play it. Just be careful - this card's trigger isn't as straightforward as the other dragons' and this will require some planning.

This is a pretty punishing trigger. While you're not getting their best creature, you're coming out ahead because you likely either traded with their flier or ate a removal spell. Either way, this will get their best small creature. I don't know how soon you want to pick this in draft before I see the whole set, but I'm pretty bullish about this guy compared to the other dragons in the cycle.

This could potentially blow someone out if it connects. This will also make combat math difficult, forcing more trades than they would like if they don't manage to block this. I like this guy a lot, and 6 mana isn't insurmountable in this limited environment. I like fliers in limited, and this one is better than most. Dragons at uncommon for all sounds good to me.

This is a nice consolation prize for blowing up, although it's unreliable. You're likely picking something you don't really need to blow up from among the legal targets, which doesn't make this a reliable source of Enchantment and Artifact removal. Think of this as a 4/4 flier in a color that doesn't get 4/4 fliers all that often, and a color that has some decent ramp and you'll likely feel better about having this in your  draft pack or sealed pool. His triggered ability isn't the best in his cycle, though it looks like it at first, but this will see limited play and sometimes its trigger will deter them from killing it.

This seems like a decent consolation for a creature dying, but it's also a Life's Legacy you have to pick way early. If similar cards like Momentous Fall were unexciting in Limited, I don't know how much I like this. Still, without a ton of bounce spells in this block, this could get you some decent value. I'm no limited expert, but this seems like a relatively late pick.

I don't doubt this effect is worth 3 mana. The real question is whether this card is worth a slot in your 75.

I have seen a lot of people with "cute" ideas, and I don't know if "cute" cuts the mustard. That said, I remember "cute" plays like "Harvest Pyre targeting Boros Reckoner" getting there for a while.

I think this card will appeal a lot to casual players for whom playing Stuffy Doll is an option. This may see some small (as in not enough to drive its price up) play in EDH but it's hard to make a case for it getting a slot in the deck. But this does the largest percentage of a life total in damage in Standard. Unlike Harvest Pyre, this card isn't good on its own. If they block with a big creatures, you can use that against them, but I think red wants to be doing a set amount of damage. This is a cool card in the same vein as Deflecting Palm, a bulk rare.

This would be sweet if you gave the creature lifelink, though.
