Ebay is the primary way to dispose of excess Magic cards; it generates enormous traffic, is relatively safe to sell through, and it allows for easy visual displays of your items. The bidding mechanism of Ebay gets buyers emotionally invested in cards, encouraging them to bid more and follow your items. This week, we will look at the major question of selling on Ebay: whether to use Buy-It-Now (BIN) or a traditional auction to sell your cards. Though the choice looks small, a good decision can make a difference of 20% or more on your sale. Continue reading "Maximizing Ebay Profits"

Douglas Linn

Doug Linn has been playing Magic since 1996 and has had a keen interest in Legacy and Modern. By keeping up closely with emerging trends in the field, Doug is able to predict what cards to buy and when to sell them for a substantial profit. Since the Eternal market follows a routine boom-bust cycle, the time to buy and sell short-term speculative investments is often a narrow window. Because Eternal cards often spike in value once people know why they are good, it is essential for a trader to be connected to the format to get great buys before anyone else. Outside of Magic, Doug is an attorney in the state of Ohio.  Doug is a founding member of Quiet Speculation, and brings with him a tremendous amount of business savvy.

In last week’s article I introduced a concept that could mathematically measure the comparative demand of each Magic: The Gathering single.  This week I would like to take some time to explore what that means, and where it comes from. Later on I will explore why it might be useful, how it could be practically implemented, and how it could influence our acquisitions.  I believe that the going price of any card (eBay, an online store, or at a local shop) is not enough information to justify the price or value of that card and that by adding an additional, rational figure to the price, we can better understand and perhaps predict singles pricing.

Born in Seattle, Washington, Chris McNutt has been playing and collecting Magic: The Gathering since Unlimited Edition. As an active player, tournament organizer and judge he regularly scrubs out of Pro Tour Qualifiers but inexplicably cleans up at the local draft tables. When not net decking Chris is either busy working as an Information Technology Sales Rep or spending time with his family. Other non-magical pastimes include playing guitar and an unhealthy number of video games. Cursed with an undying love of generating spreadsheets purely for “fun”, he’ll be crunching the numbers each week in order to serve up delicious data burritos to the salivating, hungry readers of Quiet Speculation.

Burn, baby, burn!  It's time to check out how red did in the rares department with M11.  The color of fire, passion, and Tom LaPille's hair got an interesting take on an old concept, a giant dragon to please the Timmys of the world, and a re-imagining of a former archetype-definer.

Black got some of the best rares in the set, in addition to a bombastic mythic in Grave Titan.  A few reprints headline the color's rare section, and there are a few very powerful new cards available to the Dark Side as well. Continue reading "2011 Core Set Review – Black"

How is the value of a card determined? The short and simple answer is that it’s a combination of supply & demand, playability and hype.  Even though this is absolutely true it doesn’t tell us anything. How do you accurately quantify hype, count up the times Jace, The Mind Sculptor is mentioned by Patrick Chapin and Conely Woods and divide by 2? Continue reading "The Nut Draw – The Value of Card X"

All good things must come to an end.

Quiet Speculation has been slowly dwindling for some time now, as you have no doubt noticed.  There are many reasons for this, but the main reason is that I’ve been working on its successor: Doubling Season!  Please read the “Welcome” letter, but I’ll give you the gist.  Jon Medina, of MTG Metagame and I, have joined forces to create the single best MTG finance site online today.  We’ve got some great contributors onboard, including Doug Linn (who writes Legacy’s Allure on StarCityGames), Chris McNutt ( who regularly does some heavy charting/graphing work on presale prices) and Russell Tassicker, who also writes with me on ManaNation.

Rather than just let this site peter out and die, I’m rolling all of my blogging and writing into Doubling Season.  Jon and Russel will be doing the same.  Those of us who write for other sites will continue to do so, with no change in quality or quantity of content.  All the content on the new site will be exclusive - I don’t believe in regurgitating the same crap over and over again.  I’ll leave up this message on QS indefinitely, but all further content will be posted on the Doubling Season page.

I’m entirely sure that this is for the best.  Quiet Speculation did it’s job, and it did it well.  I’m giving it a proper burial, and it’s being replaced by a bigger, badder, and more elegant site that offers more than QS ever could.  Jon and I are positively giddy at the potential of Doubling Season, and I hope that everyone who loved QS will join us over on the new site.

Thanks for a year to remember.  I’d be nowhere without the support of my readers, and I hope that Doubling Season ends up with as many great fans as QS had.  If you have any questions, comments, or feedback, you know how to get in touch.

See you all on the other side!

Howdy folks, and welcome to my very first article for DoublingSeason.com! For those of you who don’t know me, I’ve been blogging about MtG finance on Gwafa’s Bazaar since October 2009 and writing for ManaNation about all sorts of stuff since the start of 2010. I find evaluating new cards to be one of the most interesting parts of this hobby of ours, and spotting trends and under-appreciated gems is a talent that can be quite profitable. Blue got some interesting mythic rares, but how did it do in the rare department?  It got a number of mediocre reprints, but a few of the new rares are perking up a few ears.  There's a potential bargain with a mana cost-adjusted re-imagining of an old favorite, but beyond that, Blue looks pretty underwhelming. White gets the first "Buy" rating of the set, since mythics had none.  It also gets a ton of EDH power, as well as the return of a core set staple in slightly modified form and a potential sleeper in a popular cycle.  Continue reading "2011 Core Set Review – White"

Welcome To Doubling Season

Welcome to Doubling Season!

You might have found your way here from a link on Quiet Speculation, MTG Metagame, Twitter, or just by happy coincidence.  However you ended up here, we’re glad you did!  Doubling Season is a new kind of Magic: The Gathering site; one that focuses exclusively on the collectible aspect of our favorite collectible card game.  No strategy, no draft walk-throughs, no deck lists.  We believe that there are plenty of better places to get that kind of information - check out our favorite Magic sites to see a few that we like.

In the last year, demand for financially-minded Magic content has seen a sharp increase.  While there had been a few disparate sites around the Internet with such a focus, there was no single resource or authority on the subject.  The goal of Doubling Season is to provide such a resource.  The combined efforts of Jonathan Medina (mtgmetagame.com), Kelly Reid (quietspeculation.com) and a team of talented contributors will change the way Magic players look at the financial side of our game.

Compared to other sites, things are going to work a little differently around here.  The first thing you’ll notice is the Free/Mium model.  Free/Mium is just a catchy little piece of Internet jargon that means that there will be both freely available and paid content on our site.  The reason for this is simple.  There is a slight conflict of interest when it comes to writing about financial matters.  If we write about a potential pick-up that we believe stands to make us some money, we are left with a very unpleasant choice.  If we write about it, we often lose money out of our own pockets by informing others of the opportunity.  If we sit on the knowledge or just delay publication slightly, we’re not serving the interests of our readers to the best of our ability.  By offering both free and paid content, we can confidently write about our calls and serve our readers without fretting much over the lost gains!

In addition, running a multi-contributor site with daily content is a very time-consuming job.  Running a site like this takes both time and money, so it is our hope that if you enjoy what you read here, you can help support us by contributing one, the other, or both.   If you disagree with paying for content, or simply lack the means to do so at this time, don’t sweat it.  We’ll be publishing our Insider content on the free side after a few weeks, so you can decide for yourself if it’s worth the money.

It should be noted that the owners and contributors of this site can, and will, “put their money where their mouth is”.  That is to say, we often take our own advice.  Unlike in the securities industry, which is heavily regulated, there are no laws governing buying a card in advance of breaking news.  A journalist without integrity is either a criminal or a shill, and we plan to be neither.

We will be the best source for Magic: The Gathering financial analysis, predictions, and information.  We’ve got a great team assembled already, and as the site grows, we will continue adding on more great team members.  If you’ve got any questions, concerns or feedback about the site, please don’t hesitate to email us.  Our individual contact information is on our Biography page.

Welcome again, and keep doubling up!

Welcome to Doubling Season's 2011 Core Set partial spoiler review.  Around two weeks before a set comes out, we do a roundup of all the recently previewed cards to give you an idea of where the set may be heading.  We'll do a full review when the complete set is revealed, so these are just first impressions.  Context is everything, so valuations and ideas can change quickly.  We'll be using GatheringMagic's Spoiler for reference, and in most cases, only discussing the rares.  There are obviously a few uncommons that bear discussion, which we'll do at the end.
