Ewww.

Standard likely would only run one curve-topper type creature and this has stiff competition from Soulflayer and Necropolis Fiend and common sense. Standard is out, which leaves EDH.

EDH don't want this. This has a few things going for it.

  • It's in Sultai colors
  • It puts things in the yard
  • It can be a political card, allowing an "opponent" let you select a removal spell you need to thwart a third player
  • You can pay his commander tax by delving more cards, making him easier to recast

The negatives outweigh the positives, the most important of which is that this is worse than Sidisi, Brood Tyrant, a general people aren't enthusiastic about. Why would you not build The Mimeoplasm and build this instead? This has "bulk rare" written all over it.

I have seen a lot of mixed reviews online. Durdles have said "I need a playset" and the good (condescending) people over at /r/spikes have said "Seems like a really bad Figure of Destiny" and maybe they're both right. Can't this be terrible and appealing to durdles? Let's look at what it actually does.

It comes down as a 1/1 on 1 sometimes, and can be a Watchwolf on turn 2 at the cost of having a second creature. I'm not super impressed so far. For 4 more it becomes a 3/3 Trampler with Lifelink. 6 more mana puts it over the top and makes it a 8/8, briefly, before someone casts Hero's Downfall on it.

Yes, I realize "It dies to removal" is a facile argument, but in the context of the other things that Abzan-colored decks are trying to do, isn't what it takes to make a creature a 8/8 with no hexproof sort of relevant? Until something changes, Abzan decks are on the Whip of Eerebos plan and this is bad on that plan. Abzan aggro is a thing lately but unless you dump your hand super fast, there is likely something better to do with your mana.

Could this be the last weenie a Soldier of the Pantheon, Fleecemane Lion etc deck needs? A 3/3 Trample, Lifelink is formidable. But spending all turn every turn to get this guy there could be too onerous. This is a $10 preorder and I think this likely ends up around $5 based on what Abzan is going now and the format's reluctance to play small creatures that you can't summon unless you tap a Mountain. The ceiling for this could be as high as $20 if the metagame shifts, though, so if you're betting, you're betting big.

We took a few days' breather off over the weekend and WotC decided to dump on us today. I'll cover the rares here, but the rest of the spoiled cards will get their own detailed breakdown in the comprehensive spoiler coverage page linked at the top. Be sure to check that out as well. Let's get on it.

Arcbond

I don't doubt this effect is worth 3 mana. The real question is whether this card is worth a slot in your 75.

I have seen a lot of people with "cute" ideas, and I don't know if "cute" cuts the mustard. That said, I remember "cute" plays like "Harvest Pyre targeting Boros Reckoner" getting there for a while.

I think this card will appeal a lot to casual players for whom playing Stuffy Doll is an option. This may see some small (as in not enough to drive its price up) play in EDH but it's hard to make a case for it getting a slot in the deck. But this does the largest percentage of a life total in damage in Standard. Unlike Harvest Pyre, this card isn't good on its own. If they block with a big creatures, you can use that against them, but I think red wants to be doing a set amount of damage. This is a cool card in the same vein as Deflecting Palm, a bulk rare.

This would be sweet if you gave the creature lifelink, though.

Insider: The Impossible Science of Evaluating Cards in a Vacuum – How to Have a Responsible Spoiler Season

Are you a Quiet Speculation member?

If not, now is a perfect time to join up! Our powerful tools, breaking-news analysis, and exclusive Discord channel will make sure you stay up to date and ahead of the curve.

With every new set we get an a thrill-packed spoiler season--cards being pitched at us like each and every one is The Second Coming.

In the not-too distant past, spoilers consisted of a half dozen or so cards, and you saw the rest at a regional prerelease. Now, spoiler season is a two week long commercial that we consume ravenously through a variety of channels and can never get enough of.

These days, Wizards produces enough cards to spoil a new card every single day of the year. And we would still lose ourselves each and every time.

Let's face it: Magic is awesome like that.

With the mountain of spoilers we're burdened, we have the impossible task of evaluating these new cards. Half the problem is that each of them is accompanied by a trumpet blast and angelic chorus praising the card from on high. Every writer "gifted" an exclusive spoiler is forced to praise whatever turd they're given, whether there's nuts in it or not.

The other half of the problem is the overwhelming wave of hype that drowns out every rational thought we're able to form when evaluating spoilers. How do we filter the tainted lenses of the masses without a cascade bluffs?

Some Turds Clearly Stink

crucibleofthespiritdragon

This is what a big stinky turd looks like. There is not really a scenario where this card is playable in anything outside of a clunky Scion of the Ur-Dragon EDH deck.

"But you can save up for a really sweet dragon spell!"
-Timmy, Power Gamer

No child, it's terrible. How long does it take for this card to pay off?

  • T1: One mana
  • T2: Zero mana because you're charging your Crucible
  • T3: One mana because you're charging your Crucible
  • T4: FIVE MANA!!!! Quick! Cast Stormbreath Dragon or the mediocre five mana dragon of your choice. Surely it will be enough to make up for three turns of doing absolutely nothing. Surely.

So we know this card is a turd. We know, as a turd, that it will virtually never be worth more than $1, and even that is being generous. Outside of a scenario where Wizards prints a five color dragon that wins the game in one attack, this card simply won't see play.

Some Cards Will Break With the Right Friends

Soulflayer

Soulflayer is the type of card that's likely to break and unbreak eventually. Right now the card plays well with a variety of cards showing up in Standard, but there's still some boxes to check off. Slotting Soulflayer directly into the various Whip of Erebos strategies seems like a "gimme", but mostly because everyone forgets we already have a 4/4 for six mana with Delve: Hooting Mandrills.

For Soulflayer to be better than a pack of damn dirty apes, you need creatures with sweet abilities to hit the bin. Obvious Standard candidates include Siege Rhino, Sylvan Caryatid, and Hornet Queen--cards that already play well together in the Abzan Reanimator decks. You could theoretically exile Soul of Theros to grant Vigilance, but you're probably better off paying the mana and getting the big payoff.

There are two cards in Standard that stand to gain by association with Soulflayer - Erebos, God of the Dead and Pharika, God of Affliction. Both of these cards are already playable in Abzan Reanimator to varying degrees, but being able to gobble up extra copies to make indestructible Soulflayers is a promising prospect. Adding two to the devotion count certainly doesn't hurt either.

Once you go into Modern, a format that's always been unfriendly to graveyard based strategies, you hit some synergies with Vengevine, Stinkweed Imp, and Narcomoeba, but there are a lot fewer Tier 1(ish) caliber friends for Soulflayer to play with in Modern than there are in Standard.

In both of these formats, a few boxes getting checked presents a huge opportunity for Soulflayer to become more than a fancy Hooting Mandrills. Much like how Stoneforge Mystic was only seeing play as a one-of in Fauna Shaman decks before Scars of Mirrodin block was printed, the mere printing of a couple cards that pair well with Soulflayer--or the lack thereof--will send his (her?) price rising and falling.

The Painfully Ambiguous

Temporal Trespass

Here's the card that inspired the article. Twitter was ablaze with polarized comments ranging from nonsense about this being the Time Walk to Treasure Cruise's Ancestral Recall. How could we not connect the dots? Humans naturally seek out patterns where none necessarily exist.

Connection or no, we still have to answer the question: is it good?

I think not.

Time Warp costs five mana and only saw fringe play during it's time in Standard. Temporal Mastery costs seven mana and can be cast occasionally for two mana and saw roughly zero play in Standard.

These are our reference points. Temporal Trespass costs as much as eleven but as little as three. Three mana for a time walk does look pretty sweet. But there's a slight problem--it's three COLORED mana.

Which deck in Standard is going to be casting UUU spells easily? Maybe Blue/Black control, but they're already pushing the delve limit between Treasure Cruise and Dig Through Time. If the deck could support more hugely expensive spells with delve, we'd probably see Empty the Pits or Dead Drop showing up.

That's not even taking into consideration that attacking with Pearl Lake Ancient is the deck's only real capitalization on that extra turn.

What if we put it into another deck? Traditionally, Time Warp effects have only shown up in decks that chain extra turns from multiple sources and turbo-lands style decks. So far, the only other source of extra turns in Standard is Ugin's Nexus, and the only sources of mana ramp are far too lackluster to support a traditional turbo lands deck.

So it's unlikely that there is even an archetype that could exist to slot this card into... unless... maybe Narset, Enlightened Master becomes a thing.

We can obviously expect this card to show up in Commander decks, but that's probably not enough to push the price higher than bulk mythic status. Foil copies will probably end up at $7-10 come next October, but this is not a card I would bet anything on, no matter how excited Evan Erwin & company gets about it.

Having said all that, I'm not going to be surprised when I am 100% wrong and this is a dominating Standard. Ambiguity, amirite?

Good, But How Good?

Monastery Siege

These are my favorite cards to evaluate because it's pretty easy.

This card is clearly awesome on so many levels.

The mere concept of a Shaolin Master that spits out students is amazing enough all on it's own, but add in the fact that the card creates hordes of badass little monks is too good to pass up. Despite this card being awesome on multiple levels, they have to start on one of those levels for the preorder price, and they're often wrong.

Monastery Mentor started out at $19.99. Now he's at $29.99 and I would not be surprised to see him climb another $5 before the set hits the market. A $35 price tag is pretty near the $40 "soft cap" we've seen in Standard cards over the past couple of years, so I definitely wouldn't buy in at that as a spec. If you need them to play, then you know what you have to do.

Evaluation

Evaluating cards before seeing them in action is an insurmountable task. Success is simple if you follow a couple simple rules:

  • Use history - understanding history helps us understand the future
  • Make connections - some cards make other cards better
  • Ignore the hype - "the next Jace, the Mind Sculptor" is not a thing that's likely to happen for a long long time
  • Be patient - sometimes there isn't a good spec, don't force it, opportunities will come with patience

Insider: Are You Maximizing Value from MTGStocks.com?

Are you a Quiet Speculation member?

If not, now is a perfect time to join up! Our powerful tools, breaking-news analysis, and exclusive Discord channel will make sure you stay up to date and ahead of the curve.

I’ve outlined my daily website reading for the latest MTG Finance news in the past. I’ve mentioned sites like Twitter, mtgstocks.com, and especially our very own QS Forums. Even Reddit can, once in a while, have a relevant thread worth at least glancing at – although Reddit has not been a part of my daily routine. Unless I see a link from an established member of the MTG community, I ignore the site altogether.

Recently, I was playing around with various sites when I stumbled upon a gem of data I had not been previously aware. Namely, I’m talking about the other information on mtgstocks.com:

mtgstocks

Have you ever explored this site beyond the daily and weekly Interests tabs? This week I’ll take a closer look at a couple of the other pages that may prove useful to you, along with a specific analysis of what I find there.

Analytics – All Time Highs and Lows

While the Interests tab is often the leading indicator for price trends occurring at a precise moment, there is a huge collection of data available in the Analytics tab.

The All Time Highs/All Time Lows page reveals just that: cards worth at least $5 that have reached their all time highs or lows in the past five days. Since the cards are sorted by date, you can even focus on the cards reaching highs or lows on any given day!

What can we learn from this page as of January 3rd?

Well, firstly, I count 24 cards hitting all time highs on January 3rd, along with another couple dozen hitting highs in the previous four days. This nearly parallels the 25 cards hitting all time lows on the same date – this appears to be fairly balanced. Thu,s there may not be an indication that the entire MTG Card market is trending one way or another. More on that later, however.

So we’re left to exploring a close up of the cards appearing on this list. The first thing I am observing is that there are a ton of casual/Commander cards appearing on this list. Many of these cards have been from older sets or sets with smaller print runs. No surprise there.

Examples in this category include Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite (though she’s played competitively as well), Phyrexian Tower, Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger, Konda's Banner, Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon, etc.

Thus we can confirm that casual cards from older/smaller sets can be very good investments, even in an environment where card prices have trended poorly overall.

Other writers on this site have consistently pointed out strategic casual buys are the way to go, and this list certainly doesn’t refute their claim.

Phyrexian Tower

My one caution: be weary of cards on this list which aren’t on the Reserved List.

One random reprint – whether it be in a Duel Deck, Commander product, or one-off set like Conspiracy – will absolutely crush the price on cards like these. Demand simply cannot keep up with a sudden surge in supply.

Also on the all time high list are a handful of competitive cards across a smattering of formats: Glimpse of Nature (thank you Legacy Elves), Blood Moon, Scapeshift, Natural Order, Chain Lightning, Choke, Sylvan Library, etc.

This list is also very insightful because it reveals metagame trends in various formats. For example, the rise in popularity of Elves and Burn strategies in Legacy likely explains the movement in Glipse of Nature and Chain Lightning. While Scapeshift is not the number one strategy in Modern, it continues to be a Tier 1 or Tier 1.5 deck. Modern is also responsible for the recent jump in Choke.

Scapeshift

Again, I’ll mention that we need to estimate how likely a given card will be reprinted before going deep. But if you want in on the hottest cards and metagame trends – especially in Modern and Legacy – the all-time highs list is a great place to explore once in a while.

On the flip side, the all-time lows can provide equal insights. Remember when I talked about the impact of reprints on prices? Well, a good number of all-time lows are due to recent reprinting, and the data present on this page is very supportive of such a thesis.

Reprinted cards seeing all-time lows include Misdirection, Pernicious Deed, Mutavault, Scavenging Ooze, and an a couple Shock Lands. What’s worth noting here is that it’s the original printings that are getting crushed, price-wise.

Even with Shock Lands, where the artwork differs between original and new printing, prices of the original Shocks continue to drop. To me, this indicates that Onslaught fetch lands will continue to drop even a couple years after their recent reprinting in Khans.

To those who think it’s not worth selling now and re-buying back in, I leave you this chart on Stomping Ground as my counterargument.

There’s a lot of downside left in Onslaught Polluted Deltas. Trust me.

Stomping

There was an error retrieving a chart for Stomping Ground

The last reason I am arguing that the all-time highs/lows page is worth exploring on occasion is because it picks up on subtle, slow-moving trends.

I used to rely heavily on the Interests tabs to know what cards were hot and which were particularly cold. But we must remember that the Interests tabs only captures cards moving at a certain rate. There may be a handful of cards hitting new highs under the radar simply because their growth has been so slow.

This is precisely how something like Mikaeus, the Unhallowed can go from being a $4 card to a $10 card without my notice. It may have been an Interest once in a while, but not consistently enough to really get my attention. But now I’m looking back two years and I see an amazing bit of price appreciation.

There was an error retrieving a chart for Mikaeus, the Unhallowed

Don’t miss out on this movement – the more aware you can be of such trends, the more savvy you’ll be as a trader.

Analytics – Most Played Cards

The other tab I wanted to take a quick look at this week is the “Most Played Cards” tab, also under the Analytics tab. This page gives you a handy snapshot of the most played cards in all formats over the last 30 days, updated on a daily basis.

Most played 1

Most played 2

The prices are a bit awkward because I believe the website refers to a somewhat odd default for pricing. Promo versions are often cited, hence the $750 price tag on Force of Will. But despite the odd pricing references, this page is still exceptionally valuable.

In fact, I’m not going to visit this page to see prices. Rather, I am interested in one thing only: what cards are hot.

From here, we can look at individual cards on the list to see which have pulled back in price – especially during the winter swoon. For example, I see Stoneforge Mystic showing up in the Top 20 of the Legacy list. Abrupt Decay is just one spot behind her on the Legacy list and it’s in the Top 20 for Modern cards as well.

Yet both these two cards are off their highs by quite a bit.

Decay

Stoneforge

Since I don’t see either of them getting reprinted in the near term, I’d go out on a limb and recommend these as solid acquisition targets. In fact, I’ve already acquired a few copies of each in the last couple weeks. It’s reassuring to see that my bets on these cards are likely to pay out.

One other use for this list – you get an indication of which smaller commons and uncommons are worth pulling from bulk. Lightning Strike may be a $0.15 common, but it’s in very high demand given the Standard metagame.

Therefore, the next time you come across them in your collection, go ahead and set them aside to bring to your next FNM. You never know who will be scrambling for their last minute needs to finish a new Standard deck, and being able to trade these out would virtually turn bulk into some value. The same goes for Seeker of the Way, Hordeling Outburst, and Drown in Sorrow.

There was an error retrieving a chart for Lightning Strike
There was an error retrieving a chart for Drown in Sorrow

And More

I’m almost out of space, yet there are a few more pages worth mentioning! The Standard Analytics tab provides a nice summary of which cards have shown up on the “Interests” tab the most over the past 7 days. This tool is useful when cards are only moving up in 2-3% increments. One or two moves like this can easily be overlooked. But a 3% gain 7 days in a row can lead to a significant move!

The Set Analytics tab captures average values of every card in every set. While this data isn’t very interesting for something like Homelands, it can very useful when trying to identify a bottom in newer sets.

The Metagame tab captures the top decks played across each format. While the naming convention isn’t necessarily consistent with official names (e.g. “Team America”), it still provides an interesting snapshot into which decks are most popular right now and could possibly explain various trends.

For example, in the Legacy list, we see that indeed Burn is the most played deck currently and Elves is number 5 – hence the movement in Chain Lightning and Glimpse of Nature.

In summary, the data on mtgstocks.com goes well beyond the daily interests tab. Up until recently, I hadn’t really taken the time to explore the analytics tab, but a recent exploration has revealed a huge database of valuable information.

While it may not be necessary to check this tab on a daily basis, I can certainly see merits to reviewing it weekly or at least monthly. To ignore it is to ignore some of the more subtle trends in MTG Finance. Often times, this is where a lot of the money can be made. After all, everyone is now aware that Choke is randomly a valuable card. But not everyone is aware of Phyrexian Tower’s gradual rise in price.

…

Sigbits

It’s often wise to confirm that a card is truly hot by comparing the all-time highs list with SCG’s prices and stock. Here are some examples of hot cards that are truly in demand right now. All are worthwhile considerations for trade targets.

  • Puppeteer Clique has been hitting all-time highs lately. It’s no surprise that SCG is sold out of the Shadowmoor rare at $5.15. I suspect it will be restocked at a higher price soon enough.
  • Narset, Enlightened Master is generating a lot of interest in Time Walk effects. This explains the recent jump on Beacon of Tomorrows and Time Stretch. The latter is sold out at SCG for $6.19 and the former at $5.19.
  • Is Gaddock Teeg even played anymore? I can’t say I’ve seen him cast in a competitive event for quite some time, yet SCG is sold out of NM copies at $9.19 and it has recently hit an all-time high on mtgstocks.com.

I like to think I'm part of a pretty good podcast at Brainstorm Brewery. We strive to provide relevant information every week and present it in an entertaining manner.

We learned this, of course, from Limited Resources, the best tool you'll find for improving your Limited game. Marshall has been the driving force behind the casts as the co-hosts have rotated over the years. The search has been on for a new co-host in the past weeks, and there's some big news on that front.

That's right: Luis Scott-Vargas has joined the cast, and in doing so forms basically the dream combination of Limited experts for a podcast. I'm excited to hear LSV step into the virtual booth with Marshall, and  you should be too. You'll be able to find their work every week at www.lrcast.com.

2B
Creature - Human Warrior
Whenever Mardu Strike Leader attacks, put a 2/1 black Warrior creature token onto the battlefield.
Dash 3B (You may cast this spell for its dash cost. If you do, it gains haste, and it's returned from the battlefield to its owner's hand at the beginning of the next end step.)
3/2

This is exciting, and it can spiral out of control. That said, it has 2 toughness and the tokens have 1 and you can only ever make 1 a turn. There are better token makers, better beaters and better dash creatures. Will this see 0 play? Hard to say. I do know that I would hope a $3 preorder would be more exciting. We know roughly that the ceiling for this is $10ish unless it sees a ton of play, so if you think I'm totally wrong and this guy is a 4-of autoinclude, wager your $3 a pop, but I'm staying away.

Yeah? This is the Game Day promo you're going with? It looks awesome and I can see EDH applications, but is this effect good enough for 60 card formats? I really tend to doubt it. It's very expensive and for 6 mana, you want to be doing more. This has a lot of versatility compared with other cards that put tokens into play that are copies of a given creature, but those never really saw play (or were ever worth much money) and if a token-maker that's 3 mana can't get there with populate around, I can't imagine we want to pay 6 mana.

This is solid in Limited. OK, solid is an understatement. This is a real punisher in Limited - either mode is very, very good. I think there are a lot of EDH decks that can really use the +1/+1 counters, too, but this seems like one of the less exciting sieges for constructed. This is a $2ish preorder, and I don't think it's going up from there.

Flamewake Phoenix

This is the first Phoenix I have been excited about since M14. This is just so... solid.

A well designed Phoenix for once (and at rare and not mythic) could mean that we see people serving with Phoenixes again. This will see play as a four-of if it sees play. So we're betting on whether there is a deck that can trigger its ferocious reliably enough that we can serve with this in Standard. I think with some burn spells and other red, aggressive creatures, we could see Standard really speed up. If this sees no play, $4 pre-order will hurt. We watched Flame-Wreathed Phoenix, a mythic, plummet from a $7-$8 preorder to $1, basically bulk for a mythic. If it does see play, there is real room for growth, but at non-mythic, the ceiling is around $10-$12 unless it is a staple in many decks. I don't see this being worth Courser of Kruphix money, so after fees, best case scenario is roughly a double-up. Seems risky, but if you want these to play with, $4 is probably relatively safe.

This is fine. I think the word “each” may be the least necessary bit of text on a Magic card! Maybe a Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker deck wants this? Maybe you’ll get 3 of these and ruin the 2-headed giant tourney at your prerelease?

More likely this is a solid, grindy card in a mardu deck. I like that this hits for 2 if it’s not blocked. This is a real loser in combat, though, and makes me miss Madcap Skills. All in all, I think the promo is likely to be worth as much as past promos of this ilk.

This cycle is shaping up to be a little less exciting than the rare cycle. That is likely because they’re not legendary, I guess. Still, as much as this would be better as a general in a three color deck, this trigger can put games out of reach, especially since you’re already in aggressive colors and can get tokens going. Also, this activated ability can win games. It’s hard to see this getting played in Standard, and it’s hard to see being able to win a game if someone summons this in Limited.

This is roughly a $40 playset on eBay and I think that is likely too high, as powerful as this is. This is almost sure to go down unless I’m really misjudging standard. I would like to think that an ability that says “I win” could get played in standard, and if this sees a ton of play, that would be great, but this is unlikely to ever be a 4-of and that means a $10 buyin doesn’t leave much room to profit if this does see play. I like this card, but I don’t know if there is money to be made.

Citadel Siege

This is solid in Limited. OK, solid is an understatement. This is a real punisher in Limited - either mode is very, very good. I think there are a lot of EDH decks that can really use the +1/+1 counters, too, but this seems like one of the less exciting sieges for constructed. This is a $2ish preorder, and I don't think it's going up from there.

Supplant Form

Mardu Strike Leader
